Daily Joy

By Karen Ashby

“When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it.  He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.”  Ecclesiastes 5:4 (NIV)

Ecclesiastes gives us clear direction about how we are to spend our brief time on this earth: fulfilling our vows.  It’s about our sincerity and acknowledgement of God’s sovereignty, through obedience and reverence.

As we struggle in our daily lives with our marriages, kids, work and the balance of it all, Ecclesiastes goes on to tell us that as we fulfill our commitments and accept our lot in life, we will be joyful.  It’s through our fulfillment of vows that we experience joy.

Solomon continues in Ecclesiastes 5:18 (NIV), “This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot.”  ‭‭We can experience God’s acceptance, grace, and mercy in the joy He gives us in our ordinary circumstances of life.  When we give God glory and surrender His plan for our lives, even when it seems hard, or monotonous, or even pointless, we can gain acceptance of whatever joy God gives us each day.

Similar to the Proverbs 31 woman, as we experience God’s grace and wisdom, we can laugh at the days to come.  In Ecclesiastes 8:15 (NIV) it continues, “therefore I praise joy, because there is nothing better for mortals under the sun that to eat and to drink and to be joyful; this will accompany them in their toil through the limited days of life God gives them under the sun.”  While we honestly acknowledge that no one can discover the work of God, our part is fulfilling and keeping commitments made in His great masterpiece.

After battling cancer during my time on this earth, I’ve realized that life is all about living out the fulfillment of our vows made to God with joy through the wisdom He gives us.  None of us desire to be viewed as foolish in our Father’s sight.  Thankfully, these passages give us the wisdom and freedom in our daily lives to fulfill our godly commitments, while living with joy.

Are there promises that you are struggling to deliver this day?  Ask God for His fulfillment, and rest in the joy and His freedom waiting to be discovered...
